World Cup 2018

Australia played really well and to be honest if anyone was going to get three points in their match against Denmark, I fancied the Socceroos to do it. They looked much more comfortable in attack than the Danes, who, apart from the goal from Christian Eriksen, looked quite average today. The penalty might have been fortunate – it’s debatable either way – but whether it was or not, Australia deserved to get back into the match and also deserved to get something from the game. They were very unlucky against France, but they kept their discipline at the back against Denmark and made sure that they didn’t concede another late goal. They will now go into their game against Peru rightly fancying their chances if they can work on scoring goals from open play, because their two goals so far have both been penalties. That is one criticism I have – they don’t seem to have a goalscorer in their team despite having individual goalscorers for their various clubs such as Tom Rogic, Jackson Irvine and Mathew Leckie. However, they will need to beat Peru rather than sit back and hope for a draw, otherwise they are out, so this goalscoring issue is something they will need to work on before their next game.
